Outdoor Spring Furniture Refresh: Neutral Coastal Patio Ideas with Serena and Lily
Spring always feels like the perfect time to refresh outdoor spaces and create a backyard that feels like an extension of your home. This year, I focused on creating a light and neutral coastal patio that feels calm, relaxed, and inviting for spring and summer entertaining.
By layering Serena and Lily outdoor furniture with accents from Amazon, Pottery Barn, and Wayfair, the patio now feels like a true outdoor living room. My goal was to keep everything soft, neutral, and timeless, while still making the space feel warm and welcoming.
If you are looking for outdoor spring furniture refresh ideas, coastal patio inspiration, or neutral outdoor furniture styling, below is exactly how I pulled this space together.

Neutral Coastal Outdoor Seating Area Ideas
One of my favorite ways to design an outdoor space is to treat it like an outdoor living room and a true extension of your home. Instead of simply placing a few chairs outside, creating a full seating arrangement using a variety of pieces makes the patio feel comfortable and intentional.
The foundation of this space is a weather-proof outdoor sectional from Serena and Lily, styled with textured blue and gray pillows to add subtle dimension while keeping the color palette calm and coastal. Neutral outdoor furniture works beautifully because it allows the surrounding greenery and seasonal decor to shine without overwhelming the space. We’ve had this sectional for years and absolutely love it!
This combination of texture and neutrals make the patio feel elevated but relaxed, which is exactly the feeling I love for outdoor spaces.
Durable Outdoor Cushions That Last for Years
One of the questions I receive the most is how the cushions hold up over time. I’m a big believer in investing in performance fabric for both indoors and out. Spend once and if you do it right, you won’t have to repurchase.
The cushions on this sectional are made from Serena and Lily performance fabric, which is designed specifically for outdoor durability. I have the perennials basketweave in “fog” (my exact color is no longer sold but this fabric line is available in a ton of colors and is truly durable!!). These cushions have actually lived completely uncovered in our backyard for years, and they still look beautiful and brand new, season after season.
Performance fabric outdoor cushions are designed to handle everyday life outdoors, including sun exposure and changing weather. Benefits of performance outdoor fabric include:
• resistance to fading from sun exposure
• long lasting durability for outdoor use
• easy cleaning when spills or dirt happen
• fabrics designed to withstand weather and wear
Cleaning them is surprisingly simple. Most of the time a quick wipe down or gentle spot keeps them looking fresh. Towards the end of fall when the weather starts to drop, I bring the cushions inside to wash and store for the winter months. I wash them in our washing machine and hang to dry and then they’re perfect for spring!
Choosing high quality performance fabric outdoor cushions is one of the best investments you can make when selecting patio furniture, especially if your furniture will live outside year round.
Styling an Outdoor Coffee Table for Spring
An outdoor coffee table is one of the easiest places to add seasonal personality to your patio.
For this spring refresh, I styled the coffee table with a mix of coastal inspired decor pieces and soft seasonal colors. The woven white coffee table anchors the seating area, while decorative accents bring warmth and charm to the space. The blue and white chinoiserie planter paired with pale pink flowers adds just enough color while still maintaining the neutral palette.
It is such a simple way to bring in a fresh spring look without overwhelming the overall design.
Layering Outdoor Rugs for a Cozy Patio
One of the easiest ways to make an outdoor space feel finished is by adding a large outdoor rug. Outdoor rugs help define seating areas and instantly make patios feel more like an indoor room.
For this space, I chose a neutral striped outdoor rug that complements the wicker furniture while adding texture and subtle pattern. Benefits of adding an outdoor rug include: grounding the furniture layout, adding warmth and softness underfoot, making patios feel more cohesive, tying together the color palette
Neutral rugs are especially beautiful in coastal inspired patios, because they allow the natural materials and furniture textures to stand out.
Creating a Relaxed Outdoor Dining Area
Just a few steps away from the seating area is the outdoor dining space, which makes entertaining feel easy and natural. The round dining table paired with woven chairs creates a relaxed yet elevated look that complements the coastal patio aesthetic. Above the table, a fringed patio umbrella adds texture and personality while also providing shade for warm afternoons.
This setup feels casual enough for everyday meals but polished enough for hosting friends and family during the warmer months.
Mixing Investment Pieces with Affordable Outdoor Decor
One of my favorite design tricks is mixing investment furniture pieces with affordable decor accents.
The larger Serena and Lily furniture pieces create the foundation of the patio, while accessories from Amazon, Pottery Barn, and McGee & Co. add personality without dramatically increasing the budget. Some of my favorite outdoor accent pieces include: decorative lanterns, glass candle holders, various planters, textured outdoor pillows
Mixing high quality furniture with more accessible decor pieces keeps the space feeling elevated but approachable, which is exactly the look I love for outdoor living. If you are refreshing your own patio this season, a few simple updates can make a big difference.
Start with neutral furniture
Add layered outdoor pillows
Use fresh flowers or greenery
Incorporate woven textures
Anchor the space with an outdoor rug
Even small updates can transform a patio into a comfortable outdoor living space for spring and summer!
