How to Choose the Perfect Rug for any Room.

A follower recently messaged me to ask if I could put together a post on how to choose the perfect rug for a room, and honestly, it’s something I’ve been meaning to do for awhile — so here we go!

Rugs are the one accessory, in my opinion, that can make or break a room. I know some people don’t love the idea of having rugs in their home (just another item to clean), but for me, they’re an absolute must! I try to put a rug in every room of our home and all of the homes that I have the good fortune to help decorate. They add texture, color, and warmth — and are usually the first thing I’ll add to a new space.

Now the type of room and what that room is used for typically dictates what kind of rug you should choose. For example, I’ll usually recommend spending a bit more for a rug in your bedroom because there’s less foot traffic (usually shoes are off upstairs, so dirt is minimal), and it’s just nice to have something soft under foot when you step out of bed in the morning. On the flip side, I’ll usually recommend going the more affordable (i.e. synthetic) route when choosing a rug for high traffic areas like an entryway, staircase, or family room. For those busier spaces, you want something that’s easy to clean, but still beautiful.

Regardless of the room, you’ll see that I tend to gravitate toward rugs with cooler, more neutral tones that don’t feel trendy or too loud. A rug isn’t something you typically update or swap out on a regular basis, so you want it to last and you want to be able to decorate (and redecorate!) around it as you see fit.

With that said, here is a short list of my favorite rugs that I use time and time again, and will work for nearly any room in your home (think living room, family room, office, bedroom, kid’s space)! I’ve included a range of styles and budgets, but I truly feel as though each of these rugs are absolute winners and can “make” a room. Scroll down for pictures and for links to each one!
